Amarillo TX

Downtown art in Amarillo includes statues of horses which have been decorated by local artists.  

Many cities seem to have copied the successful exhibit in Chicago which featured painted bulls.  

Here are a few of many horses in Amarillo we saw.

Palo Duro Canyon is billed as an "erosion over time".  

Formed millions of years ago it was settled in the mid-1800s and developed as farmland.  In the depression the 

Civilian Conservation Corps built an access road into the 

canyon as well as a lodge and other buildings.  

The lodge serves as the museum and gift shop today.

The major feature of the park is the spectacular color bands exposed by 

erosion over millions of years.  Everywhere one looks is another special scene.

How about this for a campsite?

This view is from the rim of the canyon and gives some sense of the size and depth. 

 It is no Grand Canyon, but it is special in its own way - and you can drive into it.
