The town of Jerome, once a booming mining town, is perched at 5000 feet on the side of Mingus Mountain which peaks out at 7800 feet elevation in the Prescott National Forest. After passing through Jerome, now an artist's Mecca and tourist trap, State Route 89A climbs up and through Mingus Mountain providing spectacular views and changing forests. Route 89A eventully leads to Prescott AZ.
We paused at an overlook for pictures and some others offered to snap
us together.
Looking toward the Verde Valley from an overlook on Rt 89A.
Rugged and wild this is what confronted miners seeking copper and gold
in the 1800s (without the benefit of the modern highway).
The town in the valley is Cottonwood located about 8 miles away.
Looking uphill from the highway overlook.
The little town of Jerome sits on the side of Mingus Mountain and is
seen here from the Tuzigoot National Monument.
Built over the mining tunnels, the town has experienced several
occurrences of settling and shifting in the buildings. Creative town promoters have capitalized on
the problem by proclaiming Jerome as "A Town on the Move!"
